Heartfelt Conversations

Mary feels very frustrated because she cannot communicate with her teenage daughter Matty or her husband Mike.

Things had been especially tough since she started feeling sick due to her seasonal allergies.

Even though some days she doesn’t feel well at all, she still works 40+ hours per week and seems frazzled and in a bad mood most of the time because of the side effects of her medication.

Whenever she and Matty talk, it usually ends in yelling, so Matty doesn’t share much with her mother about what is going on in her life.

Mary’s relationship with her husband Mike is OK but not very exciting any more. Mike is a good man and Mary appreciates and loves him, however, he has become more of a roommate than a romantic partner.

Mary wished that Mike would be different in so many ways but because she doesn’t want to create conflict between them.

She tolerates a lot of the things that drive her crazy and is killing her attraction towards him.

Although Mary apparently has a good family life, she feels her relationships with her husband and daughter are pretty much empty.

Deep down, Mary fears that Matty will get involved with drugs, alcohol, or other destructive behaviors because no one really knows what’s going on in that 15-year old’s world, who by the way, seems to be dealing with many of the typical teenage challenges such as hormonal and emotional changes, peer pressure, romantic breakups, etc.

Mary also fears that her marriage will eventually end up falling apart because besides Matty, their church friends, a bank account, and a deed to the house, she and Mike don’t really have much in common anymore.

So every morning Mary wakes up feeling frustrated because she wished she knew how to better communicate with Mike and Matty, but she just doesn’t know how!

Why Do The Relationships With Our Loved Ones Get So Complicated?

We don’t expect that our most precious relationships will get difficult over time, but unfortunately, sometimes they do.

Ironically, the people closer to us become like strangers, and our relationships with them bring us a great deal of stress because we simply don’t know how to communicate with them.

Whenever we make an effort to speak up, things get fired up too quickly and instead of helping, talking makes things worse!

So we end up feeling all bummed out and as a result of our frustrated communication efforts, we either secretly keep things to ourselves or we begin drifting away from our loved ones, losing precious opportunities sharing meaningful moments of intimacy and heart-felt connection with them.
